It seems strange that such a tourist tropical paradise should have been first constructed as a prison.
These days, you can find everything from basic simple wooden bungalowswith palm leaf roofs to elegant high class villas with their very own exclusive swimming pool.
In the late 1990's KoTao's very first, and until recently, only road was constructed, the road runs North to South from the far side of Sairee beach to the southern settlement of Chalok Baan Kao.
A new road is being developed on the way to Tanote Bay, and once finised it will open up the far side of Koh Taofor greater development, it is accessable with care at the moment with 4x4.
Here they discovered some thing more then just a new island to explore and soon the back packer network was buzzing about the exiting newly found island paradise of Ko Tao.
In ore by the beautiful beaches, the back of beyond aura, and of course the cheap living, back packers soon arrived in droves.
Throughout the last thirteen years Koh Toa has transformed in a number of ways as it strived to become one of the main dive destinations in Southeast Asia, drawing all levels of divers and water lovers alike. Kohtao has many beautiful bays and jungle. In the beginning of 1980's brought to Koh Taosome of the very first travellers from KoPhangan who were searching for something new away from the crowds and masses who were going barmy for the full moon party on KoPhangan. Here they found something more than just a new islandto explore and soon the back-packer groups were energetic about the wonderful newly found islandparadise. Mesmerised by the stunning pure white beaches, the back of beyond aura, and of course the economical living, backpackerssoon arrived in droves. Arrivals and departures were on the local fishing boats, and even then setbacks of several days were frequent. Back to the hammocks and a world of dreams; The boat comes another day . Consequently, as its status for beautiful nature, excellent marine life and astonishing landscapes grew, easier access was obtainable when enhanced and safer boats were brought in to cope with the number of backpackers, being engrossed to the island. Koh Toa is a very little island, only 21 sq km and practically half of that too rough to reach. To begin with the island was not inhabited, frequented only by fisherman from nearby islands when in search of refuge during storms or when in need of clean water and food. It seems extraordinary that such a tourist paradise should have been at first earmarked as a penal island. Strange, but true. From about 1933 until 1947 the island housed political prisoners. Being just about 70 km from the nearby mainland meant it was moderately escape proof! Alcatraz...piece of cake. KoTao is surrounded by a lot of Black Tip & Whale sharks too. |
